Update: Mosquito Spraying Cancelled Due to High Wind (Friday the 12th)

From Citizen Extra - the monthly electronic newsletter for the citizens of Mansfield

The City of Mansfield will continue ground spraying tonight (weather permitting) to treat two discrete areas of potential West Nile Virus risk. If there is no rain in the area at dusk, crews will begin spraying at 9 p.m. and should be finished by 5 a.m.
The areas identified are in central Mansfield near the Historic Downtown area, west towards Sayers and West Broad streets and east toward Walnut Creek Drive and East Broad Street; and the Twin Creeks subdivision, east of Cardinal Road and south of FM 1187. (See maps for more detail).
During the spraying period,  mosquito it is recommended that residents in these areas limit time outdoors, remove pet food and water dishes and keep pets inside. It is also recommended that residents cover fish ponds, if possible, and cover bee hives if they keep bees. After spraying it is recommended residents clean outdoor furniture, grills and playground equipment with water before use. The chemical used is not known to harm humans, but may cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat and skin, therefore exposure should be limited.
City staff recommends property owners check for standing water in areas such as gutters and flower pots to eliminate breeding sites for mosquitos. Howard Redfearn, environmental services manager with the city, said Mansfield will continue to be proactive in testing and in its public education program for residents.
"We will continue to monitor, test and treat with larvicide. However at this stage, our policy calls for additional measures and that includes the ground spraying. Our focus will be in those areas where the positive tests have occurred.  "We continue to test and treat areas such as drainage areas and creek beds," Redfearn said. "We also respond to calls from residents who identify areas of concern in neighborhoods. But we also ask our residents to be diligent on their own properties to make sure there is no standing or stagnant water that can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes."
The City of Mansfield participates in the Tarrant County Public Health Department Mosquito Surveillance Program, a comprehensive effort to test mosquito pools throughout the county to detect for West Nile Virus. The program, using mosquito traps and equipment provided by the county, gives cities the opportunity to begin preventative measures quickly. The goal of the testing program is to begin treatment as soon as possible and to continue evaluating and testing areas where positive results have been shown.
Updated information on testing as well as spraying activities and schedules will be available on the city's website, www.mansfield-tx.gov.
