It’s time to bring on the heat once again. The summer sun is back and warming things up and all the activities of summer are on the hazy horizon. So it gives us another great opportunity to dig in and write about some of the people, places and activities in the great community where we live.
First up, new contributing writer Cindy Brown has come up with some great ways to keep the kids occupied, avoid summer boredom and give a little something back to the community. Whether it’s donating or bagging food, working alongside Meals on Wheels or volunteering at Mission Arlington, check out some great opportunities to get your family involved and making a difference this summer. It’s all in the Homestyle section.
What’s better on a hot summer day than ice cream? We can’t think of anything. So we headed over to one of the newest ice cream places in town, Helados Handcrafted Ice Cream and Pops for some icy cold treats. They serve up freshly made “Mexican style” ice cream and popsicles that will have you returning again and again to try all the different flavors and then start all over again. They also have all kinds of drinks and snacks. Read about it in this issue’s Local Flavor and then check it out for yourself.
The great outdoors and swimming are where many of us turn for relief during the hot summer months. But back in 2010, doing so turned to tragedy for the Lewis family. That’s because they lost their son, Kyle, to a rare infection caused by an amoeba he picked up swimming during a family outing. But they turned their loss into the Kyle Cares organization to warn others about the dangers of these amoebas. Read more in this issue’s Your Neighbor.
Carol Ritchie takes us through some great fruit recipes and indulgences that are just right for summer’s warm weather. It’s amazing what you can do with the myriad of apples, berries, cherries, melons, and other fruits that arrive just in time for the season. Cookin’ with Carol has some great ideas including the not-to-be-missed recipe for Grilled Pound Cake with Lime-Mint Infused Strawberries.
As usual, everything else from Community Profile to Roadtrip has been researched and written for you to enjoy whether in the cool air-conditioned comfort of home or out by the pool in the sun. Enjoy this issue and this season!
