Mansfield ISD Updates Meal Prices for 2014-2015 School Year

Aug 08, 2014 02:13PM ● By Brian Ostrovsky
Mansfield ISD revised their meal prices during a budget work session at the August 5th board meeting. Meal prices were raised to bring the district into alignment with Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA).

HHFKA requires additional fruit at breakfast beginning with the 2014–15 school year yet there is no additional federal funding to accompany the new regulation. Additional changes to meal plans, meal prices, and the district’s Local Wellness Policy were identified and the Board approved the following new Mansfield ISD meal prices for the 2014–15 school year
  • Student Breakfast: $1.50
  • Student Lunch Elementary: $2.50
  • Student Lunch Intermediate: $2.75
  • Student Lunch Middle: $2.75
  • Student Lunch High: $3.00
  • Student Lunch High School Extreme Meal: $3.50
  • Adult & Visitor Breakfast: $2.00
  • Adult & Visitor Lunch: $3.50

(Lunch prices for free and reduced students are established by USDA. Meal price increase will not affect free and reduced price students.)

The USDA has a new set of Smart Snack standards that will impact schools for snacks and beverages sold to students during the school day. A summary from the USDA Smart Snack website reads:

The Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards support better health for our kids and echo the good work already taking place in schools across the country. The new standards preserve flexibility for time-honored traditions like fundraisers and bake sales, and provide ample transition time for schools. USDA is committed to working closely with students, parents, school stakeholders and the food and beverage industries to implement the new guidelines, and make the healthy choice the easy choice for America’s young people.

The MISD Student Nutrition Department staff is working directly with campus administrators and PTA representatives to provide careful guidance for the upcoming school year.

School Board Agendas are available online with documents, presentations, and relevant information from each meeting.
