First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX - 165 Year Tradition
You know it must be a big deal when you Google "Canton, TX" and the First Monday Trade Days website is the first result. There you read, "IT ALL BEGAN … in the 1850′s when the circuit judge stopped in Canton on the FIRST MONDAY of each month. This was the day the Judge held court. People from the area came to town on that day to conduct their business, stock their pantries and sit in on court proceedings … and watch a few 'hangings'."
By some reports, Canton grows from a small town of less than 4,000 people to the 7th largest in the state when 400k people pour in to explore what 7,000 vendors have to offer.
It appears that in the time since it first started 150 years ago this flea market has grown and evolved and is now home some of the most unique antiques, collectibles and home furnishings that can be found anywhere. The First Monday site continues, "Over the past 150 years, lots of things have changed in the Original First Monday Park; but the genuine, down-home human relationships between vendors and shoppers are the reason people keep coming back. This is a place where you can slow down, visit and ask questions, talk to collectors and antique dealers and meet the artists and craftsmen who create one-of-a-kind items."
While the original First Monday flea market took place just on the first Monday of the month the current iteration occupies the Thursday through Sunday prior to the first Monday, that's right - it is no longer actually on Monday - but the name has been retained.
