Town Square Toys was opened, four years ago, by two families who saw a need for a toy store in Mansfield. Home school moms, White and Moos run the store which has become a fixture in the local community. Their goal was to sell quality, specialty toys that inspired kids to use their imagination and creativity. As a result, they have built a classic toy store with more than 8,000 toys. Unlike other "big box" retailers, Town Square Toys encourages play, with plenty of hands on demos for the kids. They also offer a more intimate shopping experience and personal touches, such as free gift wrapping.
“Town Square Toys is truly a hidden gem in the metroplex," loyal customer Shalane Choate said. "Our entire family loves shopping there for several reasons . . . it’s local, it’s locally-owned, they provide free gift wrapping (what mom doesn’t love that!), but most of all because they know toys. Over the years we have discovered so many wonderful toys and games based on their recommendations. They aren’t just toy buyers; they really know the products they sell.”
White and Moos took some time to discuss the event and the shop in further detail.
Mansfield Magazine: What gave you the idea for a weeklong event?
White/Moos: We want to prolong the fun! Having a toy store, we are always saying "Come play with us!" and our birthday is a great excuse to have even more fun. Having specials and drawings all week long is a great way to build up the anticipation for Saturday when we make cupcakes, balloons and popcorn for every guest, and we get a visit from a life-size Calico Critter, this year it's Bell the Hopscotch Rabbit. We have our grand prize drawing on Saturday. This year it is the Giant Plush Panda Bear by Melissa and Doug.
MM: What would you say is the biggest accomplishment with the store in the past four years?
White/Moos: Our goal as two Mansfield families was to provide a fun toy store for the Mansfield area. We love giving our customers great quality toys that last a long time and giving options that are different than anywhere else. That’s our goal and that’s what we’ve done. We also provide special services like helping pick out the perfect gift, gift wrapping for free, and birthday cards. We're a one stop shop.
Some of our brands include Calico Critters, Corolle dolls, Melissa and Doug, Playmobil, Lego, Breyer horses, Magformers, Erector and Little Adventures. We have over 100 brands! We also have awesome ride ons like Plasmacars and Ezyrollers. You can’t find those anywhere else.
We have been featured in the Dallas Morning News, The Mansfield News Mirror, and are in the upcoming edition of the book, Lady's Day Out. But my favorite accomplishment is the regular customers who come in and say our store reminds them of their favorite childhood toy store. One customer called us her "toy heaven" and I love that.
MM: What's your favorite memory/memories of running the shop?
White/Moos: I think just seeing kids faces light up when they come in. We provide a place where they can come and play. We have a lot of toys and play tables out. We want the kids to play and find their favorite things. That’s always a blast! I especially love to see the older kids who walk in thinking they are too old for toys, leave with a smile on their face because they have really played.
One day a boy in our shop was begging for the latest, greatest, biggest Lego set. It was a huge set and one of the most expensive toys in the store. His mom told him he could have the Lego set when pigs fly. In the next few days, Steph's husband, Brian, took our Folkmanis pig puppet and attached a pair of our fairy wings to the pig and hung it from the ceiling. So when the customer came back, her son said "Look mom! There's a pig flying!" That's the kind of fun and whimsy we love to have. You never know what you might see.
MM: What are some lessons you've learned in the business world?
White/Moos: Our customers are absolutely best advertising. Mansfield loves to shop local. So that’s good. We have so many people that come in and say they’d so much rather shop with a local business. It can be a challenge too when you have big box stores so close, but we have awesome customers. They’ll pick up the phone when they’re in the store and call friends and say "you’ve got to come to this toy store!" Getting the word out is always a challenge. We still hear "I didn’t know there was a toy store in Mansfield."
MM: What are your big goals for year five in business?
White/Moos: Steph and I love picking out great toys and interacting with our customers. Marketing is a challenge for both of us, so that will definitely be our focus in the fifth year, getting the word out about our toy store.
MM: Where do you see the store at its 10-year anniversary?
White/Moos: Our goal is to be the go to store for all birthday parties in the Mansfield/Arlington area. To this end we would like to expand our store to include space for hosting parties as well as our play days.
MM: Any parting words to leave with the community?
White/Moos: Come celebrate and share a cupcake with us on Saturday! We love you Mansfield!
