Vernon Newsom Stadium Makes TV Lineup This Weekend

Aug 27, 2015 10:46AM ● By Kevin
Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield will host two big games Saturday, both of them to be aired on ESPN2.

The much-anticipated and talked about matchup is at 9  p.m. The No. 1 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) will face Trinity (Euless, Texas), ranked 8th.

The action starts in Mansfield, however, at 5 p.m., when seventh-ranked DeSoto, Texas and Martin (Arlington), which was a 6A-I Region semifinalist last season, face off.

"DeSoto finished 10-2 last season with its only losses coming to state 6A-I champion Allen and 6A-II champion Cedar Hill. The Eagles have a 14-4 edge in the series, including a 55-30 win last season. While DeSoto is favored in the state rankings, Martin has been explosive, scoring 86 points in a game last season," USA Today said in an article today ranking Newsom's matchups as the second-most interesting to watch this week.

There’s a lot of interest in the game as evidenced by USA Today's Super 25 Game of the Week Poll. The game has received 2,855 votes, the most out of all choices, and accounting for more than 40 percent of the votes.

Trinity has played well against out-of-state opponents, going 6-2 since 2008, according to the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Aug. 29, 2014 - Win 41-32, Eastern Christian Academy (Md.)

Sept. 7, 2013 - Loss 27-23, Jenks (Okla.)

Sept. 20, 2013 - Win 21-13, Bentonville (Ark.)
