Shrek the Musical to Benefit Toys for TotsOct 14, 2015 12:09PM ● By Kevin
Local middle and high school students will perform Shrek the Musical on Dec. 3-5. Toys will be collected as admission for the show to benefit Toys for Tots.
The Mansfield community is invited on the journey, "Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…" And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek.
While Shrek is known for its comedic timing and bathroom humor, the underlying message is what hits home for actor Hailey Hatfield who plays Fiona, “…it’s about coming to terms with you as who you are, not what you look like. Fiona originally abhorred her ogre self, but when someone choose to love her based on her personality, she has the realization that real beauty comes from within.”
“I love the message Shrek the Musical portrays. With that in mind, I wanted to do something that would benefit the community. Toys for Tots was the perfect solution. We talked to MISD and the City of Mansfield and everyone was on board! It’s great to watch our entire community come together for such an amazing cause. Shrek would be proud.” said Alice Bishop, director of Shrek the Musical and owner of Music Place Mansfield - Mansfield, TX.
Mansfield Independent School District holds an annual Toys for Tots drive each December. The goal of Mansfield ISD and Toys for Tots is to help less fortunate children within the community. Toys for Tots slogan, “Every child deserves a little joy … a toy” rings true for producer, Cory Gerdes.
“Mansfield has been voted one of the top places to live, and I think part of what makes us special, is that we care about all of our community members. With Shrek the Musical, we hope to help every child have a little joy this holiday season.” said Cory Gerdes, producer for Shrek the Musical.
Shrek the Musical will run on the Music Place STAGE Dec. 3-4 at 8 p.m. The final performance will be held Dec. 5 at noon before the Mansfield Hometown Holiday’s Parade on Main Street in front of the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Admission for every show is a toy donation to the Toys for Tots drive. Toys will be delivered to Toys for Tots Wednesday, Dec. 9 when they hold their annual drive at Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts.
"We are really trying to get the word out about Shrek the Musical!" said Taryn Fuentes, vice president of Music Place Mansfield. "Not only does it benefit an awesome nonprofit, but it’s time for Mansfield residents to unite together and prove we can still have live theater and music, despite the Farr Best Theater closing its doors!"
