Firefighter Fitness Program Encourages Healthy Habits

Mar 29, 2016 09:11PM ● By Kevin
Community, fitness and local heroes all go hand-in-hand with a relatively new program that started this past fall. We caught up with Mansfield Fire Department Captain David Holland, who discussed the new Firefighter Fitness Walk Program.

Mansfield Magazine: What is the firefighters fitness program?

David Holland: The program is a community-based health and fitness initiative designed to get people moving, increase awareness of the benefits of health and fitness, and allow our neighbors to interact with each other and their firefighters.

MM: How did it come about?

Holland: One afternoon following a workout, my firefighters were discussing ways to be more involved with the community we serve. The idea was something that encompassed exercise and proactive health awareness in a friendly way open to everyone.

MM: How and why did you become involved?

Holland: I became involved because my guys were interested in developing the program; I just provided a little direction on the administrative side of things.

MM: How has it changed since it first began?

Holland: I don't know that much has changed. Our first walk was small, maybe a dozen people, beginning at Fire Station 4 and lasting about a mile and a half. Our future walks will be in and through different neighborhoods, hopefully with an increase in participation each time.

MM: What are your plans on improving the program in the future? What will be new and exciting for the next event?

Holland: I think if we can get more folks on board, leading healthier lifestyles, that will be an improvement. We also provide free blood pressure checks and EKGs to participants. Our Citizen's Fire Academy Alumni Association also helps us out and I would like to see increased exposure for them and the services they provide not only the fire department, but also the community.
