The Mansfield Early Childhood  PTA isn’t just about playdates. In fact, what you may not know is that the MECPTA is involved in a host of programs that benefit children and charities throughout the greater Mansfield community.

The group is made up of parents of young children and focused on advocacy to improve the education, health, safety and well-being of all children.

“It was founded in April of 2003. We did not have an Early Childhood here in Mansfield," said Paige Evertt, VP of Communications for the MECPTA, "There were about 20-30 ladies that would drive to Arlington several times a month for meetings, playdates and other get-togethers. We [thought], why are we driving and doing stuff in Arlington when we could do things and raise money for our own community?” Everett said, “So we contacted the Mansfield Council of PTAS to help us get started”

We caught up with Everett and a few other leaders of the MECPTA to learn more about the group.

Mnasfield Magazine: Tell us a little about the group, can you tell me when and how it was started?

Paige Everett:  The MECPTA offers a positive foundation for young children as they grow by encouraging parental support as they enter formal school years.  Through our program, members address common concerns of parents and participate in activities that benefit and enrich the lives of our children and families.  We are open to all individuals interested in the education and development of children from birth to age 5.

In August 2003 we had our first meeting at the First United Methodist Church. They have been so great to give us a home for so long. The first year we had 75 members and we raised $6000 to give back to our community!

MM: What are your goals for the group and where do you see it heading? What sort of activities will you focus on?

MECPTA: Our main goal is raising funds for many children's groups throughout the community. Some of the groups that benefit from the hard work of our members are: Headstart, MISD Clothes Closet, Friends of the Mansfield Library, The Education Foundation, "Feed the Kids for Summer" program by Common Ground Network, and the Mansfield Activities Center.

On top of helping these groups we also have a great time throughout the year with fun play dates, and some fun time for just the parents!

Wave two large fundraisers throughout the year. Our Spring fundraiser is our largest of the two, it’s our MECPTA's Touch-A-Truck Event. You can bring your family out to touch, see and take pictures with different types of trucks from all over the metroplex! In addition, we have food trucks, vendors, music, bounce houses, balloon animals, face painting and fun!

In the Fall, we have MECPTA Goes West. It is a great way to get out and have a date night while supporting a great cause. All funds raised by ticket sales, raffle and silent auction are donated back to local children's programs at the end of the year. Tickets are $35 each and include a BBQ dinner and live entertainment.

MM: What's something people usually assume about the group? What do people usually assume that's incorrect?

MECPTA: I think some people assume that we are just a group solely for play dates. But we are much more than that we raise money for different charities around Mansfield and try to be involved in the community as much as we can. We actually have lots of "Mom" activities and are a great support system for each other.

Something incorrect is that you have to be all in to be a part of the group. We have stay-at-home moms, working moms, activities for kids, families, or just parents and just because someone can't attend all those events doesn't mean they're not welcome.

MM: What is your personal favorite aspect of the group and your mission?

MECPTA: My favorite aspect of the group is how supportive everyone is.  My mission...I would have to say my mission is to help out with the PTA as much as a I can and trying to get more people to join and become involved it really is a fantastic group of ladies and children. With MECPTA I am able to participate in a charity based organization with Moms that are in a similar life stage as myself.

MM: What's the funniest, strangest, most unusual thing people have asked you?

MECPTA: If we are a daycare.

MM: Anything else we should know about you, the group & activities, how people can get involved etc?

MECPTA: I suggest once you visit and decide to join, getting involved any way you can. When I joined, I jumped into helping the Touch-a-Truck committee and I feel that really helped me start to feel comfortable and like a really had a place within the group.

MECPTA would like to be recognized as the go-to organization for anyone seeking a place to be surrounded by other parents that also desire to be a contributing factor to the community. We have something for everyone.
