Local Mansfield Legacy graduate, and current Texas A&M star, 21-year-old Shelbi Vaughan has qualified to go to the Rio Olympics. A former Multi-Sport star, Vaughan qualified to represent Team USA in the discus event.

A few weeks ago, in Eugene, Oregon, the Olympic Trials took place. There, Vaughan placed second overall,
with a distance of 197’9″.

In an interview with the Star-Telegram she stated, "Coming in this year as a 21-year-old college senior as opposed to a senior in high school, I was a little more confident. I had already been through the process, I knew what it was like to compete against those girls at that level.”

Vaughan had previously attended tryouts at the age of 17, but placed fourth and therefore didn't qualify.

In high school, Vaughan was a part of Track & Field, and for several years dominated in the discus field. She even broke a record doing so.

Plan on watching the Summer Olympics and cheer on Vaughan! The women’s discus competition takes place August 15-16. Click here for the full Olympic Schedule.
