Some of Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department Tiffany Gorrell's Favorite Things

Jun 06, 2017 05:00AM ● By Melanie Heisinger

Tiffany Gorrell has been a big part of Mansfield’s Parks & Recreation Department as the nature education supervisor. We recently spotlighted her story in a print article, "Mansfield’s Nature Education Supervisor Helps Kids Study Nature In Nature," but we couldn't help but want want to know a little bit more.

There are so many fun things always happening at Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park and we wanted to know what some of Tiffany's favorite things to do there were. She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us, and now we feel even more inspired now to get outdoors!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How has it been working with the parks department so far?

I have always had a love for the outdoors and preserving nature.  I have been teaching and creating nature education classes since 2011 for a few nature centers here in the Fort Worth Area.  I started my interest in informal education at a zoo working in their Zoo Camps while in college.  I learned from that experience that I wanted to work with families to educate them in the great outdoors.

I enjoy working with some great coworkers in the parks department.  They are a great group of people.  The park maintenance guys are also great to work with.

There always seems to be something fun happening at the park! What's your favorite event so far?

I really enjoy all the events that I have at the park.  A few of my favorites are Home School classes, the Nature at Night event ( which will happen again in November this year), summer camps, Wild about Nature, and field trips.  Each of the classes offered are geared to teach guests all about the outdoors in a fun hands-on learning environment.

Have you joined any of the events?

I create and work most of the events that are put on at the park. So, while I don’t join the events as a guest, I am present for nearly all of them and do enjoy them.  I help create the guest experience.

Do you ever go to the park on your own time, just for fun?

I spend most of my free time walking the trails at Oliver as well as the paved paths from Town Park to McKnight Park.  I’m a full time Naturalist on and off the clock!

What are some of your favorite things to do at the park?

I enjoy hiking the trails to look for wildlife.  I enjoy finding lizards, snakes, owls, hawks, turtles, and anything else I come across.  The Treehouse is a favorite of mine because I enjoy looking into the canopy layer of the forest for birds.

I also enjoy check out the birds at the bird blinds where you can watch the birds eat from the feeders.

Are there any fun upcoming events that we should know about?

We are always doing something fun for families at Oliver Nature Park.  We have many programs coming up this summer such as Painting in the Park, Adventure Camp, Forest Camp, Intro to Fishing, Kayaking, Scavenger Hunt Hikes, Glow Rock Art, Junior Geologists, Texas Predators, Rain Barrel Making Class, Night Hike with a Naturalist, Little Naturalists, Wild About Nature, and so much more!
