Lulupops by Lina Brings Unique Cake Pops to Area Sweet Lovers

Cake on a stick is the confection of choice at LuluPops by Lina in South Arlington. This tiny little bakery opened in July of 2016 and because of their melt-in-your-mouth “cake pops” and intense Facebook marketing have been selling the baked treats by the hundreds every week since. Stop by any day of the week and you can choose from 13 different flavors of scrumptious cake pops that are just right for a sweet snack, birthday parties, wedding and baby showers or other special occasions. It’s all the brainchild of Arlington resident Lina Eltawil.

“I didn’t really have any cooking or baking background,” says the mother of two who grew up in Arlington. “But I decided to create cake pops for my dad’s birthday a few years back.” The treats were well received and word began spreading. She started posting about her baked creations on Facebook and her hobby of baking began growing.

“I was working in the marketing department for a software company at the time,” she says. What had begun as a hobby in 2013 began taking more and more of her time. By 2015, she had quit her software job and was baking full-time from her home kitchen. She decided to open a retail site and found the perfect spot – about 5 minutes from her home – and opened for business in the summer of 2016. A year in and she couldn’t be more pleased with her operation. In fact, she says, if things continue as they have she’d like to open additional locations.

 

Baking A Cake Pop

Eltawil is quick to point out that her cake pops are not just cake balls on a stick. “Our cake pops are made from freshly baked cakes, crumbled up, mixed with frosting, rolled to perfection and dipped in chocolate,” she says. “The texture is more like a truffle and they taste rich and wonderful.” She says every cake pop is hand rolled “with lots of love.” The confectionary concoctions are made from scratch using only quality cake and icing ingredients.

But as the old television sales pitch used to say, wait, there’s more. LuluPops By Lina also whips up some yummy French macarons. These traditional sandwich cookies (a top and a bottom cookie held together with a creamy filling) are also on the menu here. She makes the cookies from sugar, ground almonds and whipped egg whites (meringue) and her fillings are prepared with ganache, she says, not butter crème like many others use. She estimates her business to be pretty evenly split between cake pops and macarons. However, she also bakes up chocolate chip cookies and banana pudding.

 

Cake Bites

LuluPops By Lina is in a small retail strip on SW Green Oaks Blvd. Most of the space is devoted to the kitchen – that’s where all the magic happens. Up front is decorated with pink and white contrasting colors and a large glass counter that displays the symmetrically organized cake pops. There are a couple of stools near the front window, but the idea here is to stop and go.

You’ll find Eltawil onsite nearly every day. “I have a financial partner and good friend but I am here daily working in the shop along with two other employees,”
she says.

The 13 flavors of cake pops on display during our visit included: Funfetti, Chocolate, White Chocolate Raspberry, Vanilla, Red Velvet, Strawberry, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Lemon, Snickers, Butterfinger, Cookies 'n Cream, Peanut Butter Cup and Twix.

You can order basic dipped or drizzled cake pops and mini (3 pops) or full (6 pops) bouquets and receive special packaging if so desired. This decorative touch adds another dimension to the yummy creations and offers a special touch for nearly any occasion.

On our visit we tried the Red Velvet, Cookies 'n Cream and Snickers cake pops. Eltawil said these were some of the most popular flavors and I can see why. They were fresh, rich, and yes, truffle-like. Next it was time for some macarons - Pistachio, Strawberry and Cream and Cinnamon Roll. These were a cut above as well and much more cake-like than most macarons tend to be. The meringue produces a fluffier cookie and the ganache ensures a solid-but-not-runny filling.

For now, Eltawil plans to continue filling  (no pun intended) as many orders as she can and focusing on making the best cake pops and macarons around. “I’m just passionate about what we do here,” she says. “And I love working with people and providing treats that help make their celebrations even better.” 


 

Sometimes you come across a small business owner and entrepreneur who simply loves their customers as much as they love crafting a quality product for them to enjoy. Lina Eltawil is one such person. She began creating her own “cake pops” as a hobby in her kitchen back in 2013. Today, she operates LuluPops By Lina, a cute little shop in South Arlington that offers more than a dozen flavors of her signature cake pops (think cake balls on a stick), as well as French macarons, chocolate chip cookies and banana pudding. We had a chance to catch up with this entrepreneur and mom of two to gain some insight into the businesswoman and the woman behind the business. Here’s what we found out.

What makes your food/menu unique?

Our cake pops are originally unique.
They are not simply cake balls but freshly made cake pops on a stick. Our original flavors are crafted and then baked with the freshest of ingredients. The presentation also provides an added flair.

Any new menu items on the way?

Yes, for example, we do seasonal things such as Pecan Pie and Pumpkin flavors at Thanksgiving time. Otherwise, we try to introduce a new flavor of cake pops every 6 weeks or so.

What is the most popular or most requested dish you make?

For cake pops, it’s probably Red Velvet, Cookies 'n Cream and our newest flavor, Funfetti. The popular macaron flavors are Fruity Pebbles and Pistachio.

How do you want customers to remember their experience?

That our cake pops and macarons were fabulous treats that also helped them celebrate special occasions.

What is your favorite type of food to eat?

I love everything! My husband, Sal, loves to cook. He’s great with anything Italian. We also go to my mom’s house for her to cook.

If you go out to eat, where do you go?

Honestly, we don’t go out to eat a lot. But I do love a good steak if we do go out.

What are your other hobbies?

I don’t have time for any other hobbies. If I have free time then I want to spend it with my kids.

Do you have a favorite quote or advice you’ve received or given?

If you don’t take big risks then there will be no big rewards. Sacrifice now pays off in the future.

What’s the last book you read?

I really don’t have time to read much.

If you had to choose another profession what would it be?

I love people so it would have to be something working with people. But I do love to sing…just ask my employees.
