Every year before school is back in session, Mansfield ISD
hosts a Back-to-School event that's meant to bring the community together for a day of FREE family fun to kick off the school year.
Expect food trucks, backpacks from the Stuff the Bus Campaign, free services for children (think eye exams, haircuts, and sports physicals), community vendors, bouncing houses, games, and more.
This year, it will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts.
We wanted to learn more about what to expect this year so we reached out to Mansfield ISD's Communications Coordinator Hope Boyd to get the inside scoop.
Tell us a little bit about the Back-to-School Bash. When and how did it get started?
This is the second year MISD has hosted a Back-to-School Bash on the district level. Some feeder patterns and campuses may have held some sort of a kick-off event or school supply drive for its students, but the district’s event is for ALL students of MISD.
The idea originated from Donald Williams, associate superintendent of communications and marketing. He held a similar event for years in his past school district (Bastrop ISD), and wanted to bring the same community event to MISD when he was hired.
Who does this celebration benefit?
The bash benefits the entire community. MISD students can take part in all the free games, activities, school supplies, and services; parents can meet individuals from their child’s school and partake in the festivities; staff members are able to give back to the community while showcasing their campus/department; and the event allows businesses/organizations to have a more visible presence in the community.
How has it been received in the past?
Last year’s bash was the inaugural one. It was received very well, and we are blessed to be able to host the big event for a second year.
What can we look forward to?
There’s something for everybody at the event. The atmosphere will be like a carnival, so there will be plenty of games, activities, and student performances. Food trucks will be on site. Mansfield ISD students will also be able to take home a free backpack filled with school supplies and get free haircuts and other health services.
Do you have a personal favorite memory or moment from past events?
It may sound cliché, but seeing all the smiles on the children’s faces will never get old. There were plenty to go around. It reminds everyone why we do what we do. It’s all about the students, and being able to serve them and their families is very rewarding.
Anything else we should know?
The Back-to-School Bash is a way for Mansfield ISD to give back to our great community. None of this would have been possible without the help of our dedicated community members, organizations, businesses, and staff members who have worked together to put students first. Donations are always welcome.
