Sweet 16th: Local Mansfield Family Celebrates a Fun Coincidence Every August

Aug 16, 2017 05:34PM ● By Melanie Heisinger

Leanna Broom with her 3 boys, Ethan, Ryan and Aiden.

To the Broom family, local Mansfield residents, August 16th is a very important date. Leanna and Chris Broom have 3 boys and each of them were born on August 16th in different years.

Their oldest, Ethan, was born in 1998, their middle child, Aiden, was born in 2006, and their youngest, Ryan, was born in 2011.

To add more curious coincidence to it all, this year the first day of school just happens to fall on August 16, 2017. In finding this out, we knew we had to get the inside scoop.

Leanna and her 3 boys took some time to answer a few questions we had for them.

I hear that August 16th is an important day for your family. Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Leanna and Chris Broom

My husband Chris and I have three wonderful sons and all three of them were born on August 16th of different years. Ethan was born in 1998, Aiden was born in 2006, and our baby (not so much anymore) was born in 2011. He was a surprise blessing. I had a cancer scare in 2007, and didn't actually think I would ever be able to carry again due to a surgery I had.

Is there anyone else in your family born on that day?

No there isn't anyone else that was born on August 16, but my mother was born on August 15th, and of course with each pregnancy she hoped to have a grandson with the same birthday. Aiden was close, but decided to wait until the following morning to make his arrival.

My birthday, however, is November 16th.

Do you remember what your doctor said about the odds of this occurrence?

My doctor never really gave me the odds, but I do remember my oldest son's genetic doctor was so curious about it. She did the math and all I can say I should be playing the lottery.

I do know that all the nurses, both at my doctors office and at the hospital, were always in awe when they heard this news. I remember the Nurse Practitioner writing on my board in my room "Happy Birthday Ethan, Aiden, & welcome Baby Ryan."

How does your family celebrate the 16th?

My mother lives in Burleson, TX and has a couple acres of land and an in ground pool. We have a huge BBQ party with family and friends. There's always plenty of swimming and it goes from noon til night. My mother is a wonderful griller and she takes pride in preparing great food, and allowing her grandchildren to always have a place to celebrate their birthday.

Do you have any special traditions?

The boys have always gotten their own cake. That's something we have always wanted to do to make sure that they all know how special they each are, whether or not they share a birthday. We also sing "Happy Birthday" three times. Our family has always embraced this, and the boys each light up when we sing to them. It really tugs at my heart even after all the years of doing it.

From the Boys:

What's it like having the same birthday?

The Broom boys on Halloween

Ethan- It's cool and different.
Aiden- I like it. I mean how many people can say that - and we're all boys, too.
Ryan- It's fun, and I like going swimming at MeMe's.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Ethan- It was Radio & Broadcasting.
Aiden- Science and Math is second, because I'm really good at it.
Ryan- Recess.

Do you have any hobbies?

Ethan- Plays football, basketball, and enjoys pretty much anything sports related. I played for the Mansfield Longhorns for 5 years, and 4 of those years we won the Championship.
Aiden- I like to play Mindcraft, because you get to build and create things which I love to do. I also like to do robotics, and anything that involves building things.
Ryan- I like to play with my brothers, I like dinosaurs, and I like playing with legos.

What is your favorite food?

Ethan- Anything that has potatoes. Mashed potatoes, French fries, tater tots.
Aiden- I really like my Mom's spaghetti, but I also like hamburger and bacon pizza from Domino's.
Ryan- I love corn dogs, and pizza too.

I know that your oldest is heading to college soon, what are his goals?

So yes, my oldest (who will be 19 on August 16th) graduated from Frontier High School in Mansfield, TX on June 2, 2017. He was accepted to Frontier going into his Junior year. He excelled in Sign Language, and absolutely loves doing the Radio and Broadcasting Program that he went into.

His future goals are to continue his education in that area while in college. He will be taking his basics at TCC, and then will transfer to UTA to continue learning the ins and outs of Radio and Broadcasting. I'm fairly certain he will do great in the sports field of that for sure.

My husband Chris and I are so blessed and overjoyed that we were chosen to be the parents of three wonderful, amazing, unique boys that all share the same birthday. It is something that we enjoy telling people about and watching the reactions sometimes.

People always asks us if we would consider trying for a little girl, and my answer is always the same -- No, because I'm very lucky and blessed to have gotten three boys all on the same day. I don't think I could do it a fourth time, and if I did, and it was a girl, she would absolutely have to have her own day. (He He He)

This year on August 16th, 2017 Ethan will be 19, Aiden will be 11, and Ryan will be 6.
