Mansfield's First Ever Music Alley Festival Celebrates All Things Music & Art

Aug 23, 2017 12:10AM ● By Melanie Heisinger
Right around the corner is Mansfield's first ever Music Alley Festival. It is taking the place of the Wurstfest, Mansfield's previous city fall festival on September 9th, 2017 at 4pm in Historic Downtown Mansfield.

Expect plenty of live music, tasty food, art, and more at this exciting festival. Mansfield's City Parks and Recreation and Commission for the Arts combined forces to put together the upcoming art and music extravaganza to bring a wide variety of music and art for everyone to enjoy.

We got in touch with Rosalie Gilbert, the Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City, and Angie Henley, Special Events Coordinator, to learn more about what we should look forward to.

Tell us a little bit about Mansfield Music Alley Festival. When and how did it get started?

The Mansfield Commission for the Arts was started in March 2016, and the commission and the city want to build a creative community in Mansfield and make all the arts more available and accessible to residents and tourists.

The Music Alley Festival is one way we are working toward that goal. With the City Parks and Recreation and Commission for the Arts working together, we can bring together a wider range of expertise, and combine budgets to produce a bigger, more impressive festival.

We've looked extensively to bring in some really unique art and music acts and activities that we hope will appeal to all segments of our city. Music Alley will present some different, new, and really fun entertainment while shining a spotlight on a wide variety of music and art and making it into something that everyone can enjoy and participate in.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves. What are your roles there?

I (Rosalie) am the Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City. This is a new position that was created in December 2016. I am the city staff liaison for the Mansfield Commission for the Arts and am housed in the Convention and Visitors Bureau to help build and promote cultural arts tourism in Mansfield.

As a professionally trained harpist, I have a strong background as an artist myself, and have also worked extensively with nonprofit arts organizations and boards particularly in the areas of education, community outreach, advocacy, and communications. Running special arts events like Music Alley is certainly part of my role, but so is promotion and advertising for other arts events throughout the city, managing the Farr Best Theater, and building networking, funding, and education opportunities for local artists.
Angie is the Special Events Coordinator for the City housed in the Parks and Recreation Department. She is the creative mind and manager behind all of the large festivals hosted by the City such as the Rockin' 4th, Hometown Holidays, and more.

It looks like there will be so many fun things happening at the festival! What can someone expect while attending?

The festival will be a celebration of music and art. We'll have four themed stages of live music plus a stage in the kid's area that will feature music and other art performances like magic and marionettes that can be enjoyed by all. You'll be able to see everything from marching band and classical strings to some great dance music whether you're into country line dancing or Latin club dancing like salsa, and everything from your favorite hometown band to the Motown music sensation The Drifters.
Additionally there will be professional artists like Jimmy Don Holmes from HGTV's show "Fixer Upper" creating and displaying art, and opportunities for all festival attendees to get some hands-on experience with music and art through drum circles, instrument "petting zoos", a photo contest, selfie stations, a dance floor and dance classes, marionettes, magic, and record spin art.
Of course, there will also be plenty of food and drinks - themed to match our music stages. You can see the full line-up and get even more details by visiting our webpage:

What's something that we should be looking forward to?

Great music - The Drifters (think "Under the Boardwalk" and "Save the Last Dance for Me"), The Desperados (an Eagles tribute band), and many more.
Dancing - my favorite is salsa, but there will also be big band swing and country line dancing.
Art - Not only will the whole festival be beautifully decorated with sets and scenes to transport you into the theme of each stage as you move from "alley" to "alley", but we'll have unique artists creating and displaying art throughout the festival.
Food - Who doesn't like to eat? There will be several different vendors to enhance the ambiance of each "alley". You'll be able to have a little of everything, or stick with your favorites - whether that's BBQ or tacos.
Fun - Not only will it be fun to watch, look, and listen, but you can roll up your sleeves and try everything out as well. There will be photography, spin art, drum circles, musical instruments, card tricks, marionettes, dancing, and so much more.

I saw that there are some art contests happening. Can anyone apply to enter?

Yes, anyone can apply for any of our art contests and events. We have a photo contest prior to the festival. Winning photos will be on display during the festival. There will be prizes awarded in four categories. Folks can find more info and the flyer on our webpage, but here is the link for the contest flyer:

What's the number one thing that we should know about the Music Alley Festival?

This will be a completely different and unique Mansfield festival experience. It should have something to keep everyone entertained no matter your age, music, food, or entertainment preferences. Not only that, it is FREE.

Is there any need for volunteers?

We are always happy to have volunteers, vendors, and sponsors. If you're interested in participating in the festival in any way, please let us know:
