Mansfield First Grader Saves Toddler from Drowning

Berkley Donahue receives Community Hero Award

Methodist Mansfield Medical Center  recently presented the Community Hero Award to a first grader at Willie Brown Elementary School in Mansfield.

6-year-old Berkley Donahue saved a toddler's life while in a backyard pool earlier this year. Berkley was swimming with other children and adults and yelled out "baby in the pool" after a toddler jumped into the pool unnoticed. Because Berkley spoke up, an adult was able to get to the toddler in time to save his life.

There have been 12 juvenile drowning deaths in Tarrant County this year. Tarrant County leads Texas in childhood drownings, according to an online database maintained by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

Methodist Mansfield Magnet Nurses have been educating children about water safety and want to highlight Berkley's heroic actions to help show other kids what to do.
