Jan 16, 2019 06:08PM ● By Lisa Drake

City Manager Clayton Chandler announced Wednesday the appointment of Mike Ross, former assistant fire chief and current interim chief, to the position of Fire Chief for the City of Mansfield.

“It is gratifying to maintain consistency and stability in a department while also finding the right person for the job,” Chandler said. “Mike Ross has almost 20 years with the Mansfield Fire Rescue and has served in critical leadership roles since 2009. He has an exemplary record and received strong recommendations from former Fire Chief Barry Bondurant and other members of the command staff. He is the right person to lead a growing fire department into the future.”

Former Fire Chief Barry Bondurant retired earlier this month after 35 years of service. Ross has served as the assistant chief over operations since 2013 and served in command positions in the department for more than 13 years. He will oversee a department that covers a 39-square-mile area with four fire stations, a fifth station soon to be under construction and a staff of 96 firefighter/paramedics and administrative personnel.

Ross joined the Mansfield Fire Department in October 1999 after being certified as a firefighter/paramedic in 1998. In addition to being a certified paramedic, Ross is also a certified fire inspector III as well as a hazardous materials, rope, trench and confined spaces rescue technician. He served three years as a medical specialist on Texas Task Force 1. Ross has a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Texas A&M San Antonio.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 2006, later serving as the battalion chief over training starting in 2009. He was named battalion chief over operations in November 2011 and assistant chief for operations in April 2014.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to be a leader for this department and the community,” Ross said. “I hope to build on our accomplishments by providing direction and empowering the many talented people in this department to achieve great things as we continue to grow and expand our capabilities."
