Quinten Hudson: Music Man in the Making

Feb 23, 2020 07:30PM

We’re always on the lookout to share the stories of local Super Kids – kids with unique interests, creative talents, lofty goals, or exceptional accomplishments. With approximately 35,000 students in the Mansfield School District, the Mansfield area is the proverbial goldmine when searching for Super Kids. Our last search brought us to Lalo Tovar, a student who started his own auto detailing business, Tovar Auto Detailing.

This time, our Super Kid sleuthing has uncovered the musical talents of Quinten Hudson. This Mansfield Summit High School senior didn’t miss a beat when we questioned him about his love of creating music, his recent accomplishments, and his plans to follow in the footsteps of his musical idols.

Here’s what he had to say.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Quinten Hudson and I’m a senior at Mansfield Summit High School. I was born in San Diego, California, but since my dad was serving in the US Marines we moved a few times, eventually ending up here in Texas. Everyone in my family is musically talented, whether it’s singing or playing an instrument or making rap music like I do. I want to carry on the bloodline and make music to the best of my ability. I’m proud of having released my first album on Apple Music and Spotify.

How did you get started in making music and how long have you been doing it? What is your favorite genre?

I’ve been making music since the summer of 2019. The main thing that got me started was

when my cousin released his first album on all music streaming platforms. It was at that moment I thought if he can do it then I can do it. Making music is my number one dream! I just never thought I’d to get where I’m at right now. My favorite genres of music are HipHop/R&B and Rap and I plan to center my music around those genres.

Where and how do you record your music?

I have a studio room in my home where I use several keyboards and microphones and tools to help produce my music and make it sound good so other people can listen and enjoy.

Do you write all your own lyrics? Tell us how you get inspiration for writing.

I write all my own lyrics. If you ever see me staring off into space looking like I’m in deep thought, it’s likely because I’m thinking about lyrics for a song. I try to motivate myself when it comes to writing because I want to be unique. Being unique is one of the best parts of making music because it shows people the creative potential you have.

Does anyone else help you with your music? If so, who and how do they assist?

I do everything myself when it comes to editing, writing and producing music. For me, the project is more satisfying when done alone. My music gets distributed through DistroKid which is a digital music distribution service that many artists use because of the great benefits it provides.

Who are your music idols and why?

My music idols are some west coast rappers – specifically G-Eazy. I also get inspiration from Drake because he is one of the greatest to ever do it. Both the writing style and musical flows of G-Eazy and Drake is what I eventually want to have in my music because that’s what sounds best to me and I think I have the talent to do it.

What do you love most about writing and rapping?

I love the feeling of knowing that what I wrote could potentially have a positive impact on someone else. I have two songs called Reality and Real World where I talk about the reality people face and what the world is like today. No one is just going to hand you what you want. You have to work for it and earn your dream.

What is your favorite song on your album and why?

My favorite song on my album is My Time because every time I listen to it the song motivates me to get better, to keep going and keep chasing the dream. The title My Time means it's time for me to shine. It's time for me to show the world what I can do and that the grind will never stop.

Do you play other instruments besides the keyboards?

Yes! I can play the marimba, piano, drums and other percussion instruments.

How has your family supported your interest in your music?

My family supports me by encouraging me to keep moving forward. They want me to be successful. Based on what they have seen from me so far, they know I have the potential to get to where I want to be in life.

What are your plans after high school?

I plan to attend a university and study computer engineering while making music at the same time. As much as I love making music, I agreed with my parents that a little bit of education on something else I’m good at is important. After college I plan on getting started with my own life and trying to make an impact in the music industry.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I'm a big sports fan! Especially basketball. In my spare time I like to watch or play basketball. I also enjoy dancing and learning from other talented dancers.

Share with us at least one little known fact about you.

I once wanted to be a professional dancer and artist.
