UTA Center for African American Studies 5th Annual Conference

“Critical Issues in the Black Community: Examining Civil Rights and Civil Liberties”

Greetings y’all! I am pleased to announce the Center for African American Studies (CAAS) 5th Annual Conference. Our theme this year is “Critical Issues in the Black Community: Examining Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.” It is scheduled for next Saturday, February 25th from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the University Center on campus at the University of Texas at Arlington. It is free and open to the public. You and your people are welcome to attend! Our conference will feature scholars, professionals, and activists across a range of backgrounds and special interests. For example, our morning keynote will be delivered by Dr. Safisha Hill—a professor who established an educational program for young people in South Dallas. This event will be moderated by Rocky Turner (or Rock T) of the nationally-syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Following a set of breakout sessions, lunch, and panels on various topics, our afternoon keynote will feature DeRay McKesson of the Black Lives Matter movement. McKesson is quickly developing a national reputation by addressing issues relevant to contemporary racial inequality on major media outlets such as USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and various network as well as cable tv shows. I am thankful to our many sponsors who have supported our conference including: the School of Social Work (who is paying McKesson’s speaking fee and travel arrangements), the College of Liberal Arts, the History Department, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Department of English, African American Faculty and Staff Association, Office of Human Resources, and Office of Multicultural Affairs. See you next Saturday! Dr. Jason E. Shelton Director UTA Center for African American Studies Swift Center, Suite 129 1022 UTA Blvd / P.O.
